Course Information

Course Objectivs

The course (UC) Natura Laboratory is the only course that is taught as a block exclusively in the field, aiming to give students a 1st general contact with nature in order to develop their interest in Biology and deepen their general knowledge of habitats, organisms and problems / questions associated. These topics will later be further addressed and developed in each of the subsequent Curricular Units.

The course should provide students with a general perception of the object of study in biology including:

1. A general knowledge of marine and terrestrial habitats.
2. An awareness of diversity / biodiversity
3. An understanding of the fundamental aspects of ecology as auto-ecology and synecology
4. A general perception of the landscape and anthropic action on diversity
5. An awareness of the problems associated with field work, their preparation, planning, implementation, methodology and safety.

At the end of this course students should be able to:

? Briefly describe a landscape / ecosystem / habitat.
? Recognize the dominant species in the major types of ecosystems.
? Recognize Human activities on ecosystems.
? Differentiate and recognize some of the invasive species.
? Prepare a small expedition, including its planning for all logistical and security aspects.

Evaluation Criteria

The assessment takes into account the following items:

1. Continuous assessment - based on the filed book of each student (70% of final grade).
