Course Information

Course Objectivs

1 It is intended that students acquire in­depth knowledge of the Macaronesia flora with a particular emphasis on Madeira archipelago (and also the Mediterranean region).

2 The student must obtain the necessary rigorous taxonomic skills in order to recognize any taxa (vascular flora, Pteridophyta and Spermatophyta), being able to collect, prepare and introduce in the herbarium any specimen of the Madeira flora, correctly determining their taxonomic identity and being able to handle proficiently the most important floras available for Madeira and close biogeographical regions.

3 The student must obtain a detailed knowledge of the different monographs on genera or families.

Evaluation Criteria

Classification Type: Quantitative (0-20)
Evaluation Methodology: Teaching methods include: ­ Lectures supported by PowerPoint presentations, where syllabus material will be presented and explained using examples; ­ Field work covering most of Madeira and Porto Santo ecosystems and their vascular plant diversity. During these classes 500 vascular plant specimens need to be collected by the student. Students are evaluated as follows: ­ Herbarium evaluation (1st and 2nd part, 25% + 25% of the final grade); ­ Practical exam (25% of the final grade); ­ Theoretical exam (25% of the final grade).
