Course Information

Course Objectivs

Identify and understand the functioning of the constituent components and devices of electrical circuits
Know how to apply the fundamental Laws of electricity
Analyse direct current circuits
Analyse alternating current circuits
Know the main characteristics of tri-phase systems
Using adequate equipment and techniques for pratical work
Use of (software) simulation tools
Introduce the analysis methods for non-linear circuits

Evaluation Criteria

- 2 Exams: The Exams are intended to assess the theoretical and theoretical/practical knowledge acquired by students.
- 6 practical laboratory assignments: The assignments are assessed by writen reports (4) or oral presentations (2). These assignmente allow the students to apply the acquired knowledge (either in the laboratory and in terms of simulation), and also allows them to develop writing skills, improve the presentation of results, their oral communication skills and teamwork.

- Historical introduction; System of units; The use of models in engineering; Field notion; The Thomson experience; The Millikan experience; Notion of electrical current; Conduction in solids, liquids and gases.
- Electrical quantities: electric current, resistance of a conductor; Transfers of energy in electrical circuits; Circuit diagrams.
- Laws of electrical circuits: Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Law of mesh or tension; Kirchhoff's Law of knots or currents; equivalent resistance; Superposition Theorem; Delta-Wye Conversions; Voltage divider, current divider ; Sources of energy; Measuring instruments.
- DC circuit analysis: The number of unknowns in a circuit; Circuit analysis methods: the method of currents in the branches, independent of the mesh method, method of knots voltage; Choice of the best method; Analysis of circuits with controlled sources; Thevenin's Theorem; Norton's theorem; Matrix analysis of circuits.
- Measurement of electrical quantities: Measurement error; Significant figures; Measurement of current, voltage and resistance; Measuring power and energy; DC Ampmeters, voltmeters and ohmmeters.
- Single-phase AC circuits: Characteristics of sinusoidal signals; Steinmetz transform;Sum of sinusoidal functions; Representation of complex numbers; Capacitors and coils: Analysis of AC circuits, impedance, Kirchhoff's Laws in the frequency domain; Thevenin and Norton theorems, AC powers, power factor, Maximum power transfer; z, y and h parameters, voltage transformer, measurements of alternating currents.
- Scope: Cathode Rays Tube; Vertical Channel; Horizontal Channel; Measurement Techniques
- Tri-phase systems: Production of sinusoidal voltages; Diferent load connection options; Powers; Measuring power in tri-phase systems
- Introduction to non-linear circuits: Analysis of DC circuits with nonlinear elements, easy to implement graphical methods, Method of the pair of knots.
