Course Information

Course Objectivs

-       To gain competences in initiating, planning, managing, executing, evaluating, and finalizing a complete design cycle in a chosen domain.

-       To learn to put into practice the design methods and skills students have acquired during their study.

-       To learn to perform autonomously in the role of designer in relation with a client, with respect to the design problem and the communication regarding the design process.

-       To learn to select a relevant design problem area, formulate a sensible design brief, create and maintain a project planning.

-       To learn to plan and execute a methodic process that leads to a solid definition of the design problem, including user studies, and a structured approach to generating creative solutions that can be prototyped and evaluated with the client.

-       To learn to involve the client in the design process and focus the client during this process; to engage in participatory design sessions with users; to present design output to clients in a convincing manner.

Evaluation Criteria

This class is assessed through a series of written and designed materials presenting the design process and outcome. Finally, the work is reflected upon in a report on the student's learning. Grading parameters:

10%  Problem definition and user-needs;

10%  Conceptual design;

30%  Series of prototypes;

50%  Final design & presentation.
