Course Information

Course Objectivs

This ESP English Language module essentially aims at developing reading, speaking, writing and listening skills in nursing undergraduates. In this module, students will be asked to partake in a wide array of communicative activities so as to promote the students? self-confidence in using the English Language in patient care situations.

The above purposes can only be entirely achieved if students engage in class activities and fully commit to self-studying on a daily basis. 

Evaluation Criteria

Classification Type: Quantitative (0-20)
Evaluation Methodology: Theoretical and theoretical-practical lectures. Individual work. Working in pairs. Presentation of content depending on interaction with students. Resources: board/projection. During the semester there will be two written exams (frequências) which will test the different competencies - reading, writing and listening - of the English language.

- Unit 3. Hospital admissions: A patient record, ?Bad handwriting?, summary, admissions procedure.
- Unit 4. Accidents and emergencies: Instructions, ?A surprise passenger?, emergency helpline, poster.
- Unit 6. Symptoms: Researching symptoms, ?Mystery syndromes?,  helpline, symptom report.
 - Unit 13. Monitoring the patient: A coma patient, scan, ?General anaesthetics?, vital signs, anaesthetic procedures, describing and taking readings.
