Subject: Logic Representation of Knowledge

Scientific Area:

Mathematics

Workload:

80 Hours

Number of ECTS:

7,5 ECTS

Language:

Portuguese

Overall objectives:

1 - To develop skills in modelling, abstraction, and deductive reasoning.
2 - To foster an interest in scientific research and develop communication and teamwork skills.
3 - To develop the ability to model abstract concepts using logic, apply deductive practices, and construct formal models, as well as to undertake meta-logical studies of completeness.
4 - To understand the foundations of modal, propositional, and first-order logics, together with some of their main branches.
5 - To understand the motivations and basic concepts underlying the logic of belief change.
6 - To become familiar with the AGM model, its principal limitations, and some of its extensions.

Syllabus:

1 - Normal modal logics: axiomatization, possible worlds semantics, soundness, completeness, finite model property, and decidability.
2 - Introduction to first-order normal modal logics.
3 - Non-normal propositional modal logics and minimal models.
4 - Some bifurcations of modal logics and their application in different domains.
5 - Basic concepts of the logic of belief change.
6 - The AGM model of theory change.
7 - Extensions of the AGM model.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Theoretical expository classes; Practical problem-solving classes. The assessment consists of two written tests (to be answered individually), each worth 40% of the grade, and a group project with an oral presentation, worth 20%. Tests can be recovery in appeal, but the group project cannot. With respect to the special season, the assessment will consist of an overall exam.
