The International Seminar “Philology and Medicine: Texts, Paratexts and Contexts from Antiquity to the Modern Era’, organised by Cristina Pinheiro of the University of Madeira and Bernardo Mota of the University of Lisbon, both members of the Centre for Classical Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon.

Following on from the Gynecia Project, the event is the result of collaboration between several scientific research units, namely the Centre for Classical Studies at the University of Lisbon, the Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies at the University of Coimbra and the Centre for Literatures and Cultures at the University of Aveiro, with the participation of the Research Group in Humanities – Texts, Images and Communities at the University of Madeira.

The seminar will feature speakers from national and international institutions who, from various perspectives, will examine the nexus between philological research and the history of medicine and science, spanning from Classical Antiquity to the Modern Era. Accordingly, presentations will analyse texts by authors such as Hippocrates, Rufus, Galen, Michele Savonarola, Giovanni Marinello, Rodrigo de Castro, Filipe Montalto, Zacuto Lusitano, and Gaspar dos Reis Franco.
