Overall objectives:

1 - Contextualizing the appearance of the Travel Literature in Portugal.
2 - To Identify the thematic of the Travel in Contemporary Literatures in Portuguese language from a comparative perspective.
3 - To Reflect on travel as an intercultural phenomenon, considering the journeys of travelers and the representations of the Other.
4 - To develop literary interpretation skills in order to promote critical thinking and autonomous research.

Syllabus:

1 - Theoretical and methodological assumptions.
2 - Types of travel in the short story:
2.1 - "The journey" by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (1919-2004) in "Exemplary Tales" (1962): metaphor of the way, parable and 'exemplum'.
2.2 - "An Eastern Man in the Vastitude" by Milton Hatoum (1952) in "Island City" (2009): the figure of the foreigner, the idealization of the place and the demand for redemption.
2.3 - "Sic transit gloria mundi" by João de Melo (1949) in "The Ships of the night" (2016): exile and experience of disenchantment in the place of origins.
3 - "Italian Chronicles" (2021) by António Mega Ferreira (1949-2022): an introduction to art and journeys by authors of European culture such as Stendhal (1973-1842), Rainer Maria Rilke (1875- 1925), Marcel Proust (1871-1922) and Sigmund Freud (1856-1939).
4 - "Voyage to India" (2010) by Gonçalo M. Tavares (1970): parodic rewriting of "Lusíadas" (1572) by Luís de Camões (1524 - 1580).
4.1 - Post-modern counter-epic.
4.2 - Itinerary of boredom in dialogue with "The Book of Disquiet" (1982) by the semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares.
5 - "The Mappers of absence" (2020) by Mia Couto (1955): memory voyage, clash and meeting of cultures and the search for identity in colonial times.
5.1 - Wandering as a form of knowledge.
5.2 - Clash and meeting of cultures.
5.3 - The construction of identity in colonial and post-colonial times.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
The teacher's methodology is based on the analytical method that aims to develop the students' skills in interpreting literary texts and critical thinking. Classification Type: Quantitative (0-20) Assessment System : - One partial written exam, equivalent to 40% of the final course mark, which assesses the students' acquisition of the learning material comprised in the syllabus. - One written commentary of a literary text, equivalent to 40%, which asseses students' analysis and argumentation skills, promoting autonomous work. - An oral presentation on the literary text commentary, equivalent to 20%, which assesses students's discursive and argumentative skills focusing on their competence to discuss various points of view.
