Overall objectives:

1 - The English B1.1 course covers the intermediate level of learning English as a foreign language: common reference B1.1 level - Threshold - of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This course essentially aims at the acquisition and improvement by students -Independent Users - of linguistic structures so that their knowledge of the English tongue in its various competences may be improved at the intermediate level. Entirely taught in English, this course is intended to help students develop specific language skills, namely reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills. Students are asked to participate in a variety of communicative activities to promote their self-confidence in their use of English in everyday situations.

1 - LANGUAGE AWARENESS: Speaking, Listening and Writing
2 - VOCABULARY AND READING
2.1 - Selection of authentic oral and written texts from Units 1-5 of the adopted Course Book, Total English - Intermediate.
2.2 - Extensive Reading: Students will also read and work on a short story
3 - ENGLISH GRAMMAR
3.1 - Nouns: Countable/Uncountable
3.2 - Adjectives: Comparatives & Superlatives
3.3 - Question Tags
3.4 - Verbs: Auxiliary Verbs (do/have/be), Verb patterns with -ing/infinitive
3.5 - Irregular Verbs (B1.1 List )
3.6 - Verb Tenses: Present Simple and Present Continuous, Present Perfect Simple and Past Simple/use of for and since, Past Simple and Past Continuous, Present Perfect Simple vs. Present Perfect Continuous

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Classes are of the expositive, theoretical-practical type. The presentation of the syllabus material is achieved through constant lecturer-student-lecturer interaction. During class-meetings students will develop their oral production as well as their written work in English, both through individual work and pair work. Students are also asked to use Total English - Intermediate, Workbook, which will help them consolidate what has been studied in class. In terms of assessment, Assessment - Type A was chosen from the Assessment Regulation of Madeira University. Hence, students are assessed during the semester in two written partial exams (Exam 1: 50% + Exam 2: 50%), in which their language skills will be tested at the intermediate level. The Re-sit Exame will be a 100% written exam.
