Overall objectives:

1.1 - To know the theoretical and methodological principles of the sociolinguistic variation approach and linguistic change.
1.2 - Identify the domains of the grammar (s) of Portuguese spoken in Europe, Brazil and Africa more subject to variation and change
1.3 - Analyze and compare the phenomena of Portuguese variation drawing on data from oral corpora or from reading case studies
1.4 - To be able to use sociolinguistic tools for quantitative data analysis data from oral corpora;
1.5 - Understand the contributions of studies in the field of Language Contact (linguistic products, attitudes and linguistic beliefs, Linguistic Landscape) for the qualitative analysis of Linguistic Variation.

Syllabus:

1. - The sociolinguistic approach to variation and linguistic change.
1.1 - Aspects of the Portuguese variation and change (lexicon, phonology, morphology and syntax)
1.2 - Variationist Sociolinguistics (theoretical-methodological principles)
1.2.1 - Variable Rule. Dependent and independent variables (linguistic and extralinguistic). Quantitative and qualitative analysis, based on samples of the Corpus of Portuguese spoken in Madeira.
2. - Linguistic Contact, Variation and Social Correlates
2.1 - Language products resulting from languages / varieties in contact
2.2 - Beliefs and attitudes toward languages / varieties in contact
2.3 - Symbolic values related to the presence of languages in the public space or Linguistic Landscape.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
The objectives of this unit require teaching time allocation to theoretical-practicals and practicals. The theoretical-practicals focus on the articulation between the exposition on a topic of the program, data observation and its illustration and reading coupled by case studies on the topic in question. Practicals consist of the practical analysis, in order to develop the ability to apply the knowledge obtained and carrying out the activities underlying the proposed contents. The assessment purpose is to produce a written report (of a practical paper using the Goldvarb X program) and its oral presentation (50% + 50%).
