Overall objectives:

O1 - Stimulate the ability to interpret statistical information, whether of a general nature or a more specific of the area.
O2 - Provide the learning of some traditional techniques used in statistical inference through problem resolution using confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.
O3 - Deal with situations where the use of parametric methods is not adequate.


P1 - Descriptive Statistics: Frequency tables, graphical representation of the data, localization and dispersion measures.
P2 - Basic concepts of probability theory.
P3 - Statistical Models: Probability distributions for discrete variables. The binomial and the Poisson random variables. Probability distributions for continuous variables. The normal, Student's t, chi-squared and F random variables.
P4 - Statistical Inference: Confidence intervals for one proportion, for the mean value of a population and for the variance. Confidence intervals for the difference of proportions, mean values and for the ratio of variances.
P5 - Parametric hypothesis tests: Testing for one proportion, for the mean value and for variance. Testing for differences in proportions, in mean values and for ratios of variances.
P6 - Nonparametric tests: Chi-squared goodness-of-fit test. Test for independence and for homogeneity.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
M1. The theoretical classes are of expository type (using the computer and the projector) although students can intervene whenever they need. M2. The theoretical/practical classes are designed essentially to solve the proposed exercises, with the help of the calculator and of statistical software, particulary R and SPSS. M3. The evalution is based on the average of two tests. In case of failure, any of the tests can be recovered in ""Época de Recurso".
