Subject: General Chemistry I

Scientific Area:

Chemistry

Workload:

64 Hours

Number of ECTS:

6 ECTS

Language:

Portuguese

Overall objectives:

1 - LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1.1 - Together with the curricular unit General Chemistry II, it is intended that the student acquires and/or solidifies fundamental knowledge in Chemistry, which will serve as a basis for subsequent UCs of this cycle of studies. In particular, this course will focus on the constitution and properties of matter, and it is expected that the student can use the knowledge gained in understanding the surrounding world (including living beings).
2 - SKILLS TO BE DEVELOPED BY THE STUDENT
2.1 - Development of mental concentration capacity and autonomous study.
2.2 - Development of critical thinking.
2.3 - Ability to apply acquired knowledge to new situations.

Syllabus:

1 - ATOMIC STRUCTURE
1.1 - Electromagnetic radiation. Quantum theory (the "ultraviolet catastrophe", photoelectric effect and line spectra). Bohr's atomic model. De Broglie's hypothesis. Heisenberg's principle. Schrödinger's equation. Orbital concept. Quantum numbers and electronic configuration. Periodicity of atomic properties.
2 - CHEMICAL BONDING
2.1 - Ionic and covalent bonding. Lewis structures. Resonance concept. Formal charge. Octet rule. Electronegativity. Prediction of molecular geometry and polarity of molecules. Valence bonding theory. Hybridization of atomic orbitals. Theory of molecular orbitals (di and polyatomic molecules). Band theory. Metal bonding.
3 - STATES OF MATTER AND INTERMOLECULAR FORCES
3.1 - Properties and laws of gases. Equation of perfect gases. Kinetic theory of gases. Condensate phases and intermolecular forces. Liquid structures. Viscosity and surface tension. Amorphous and crystalline solids.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
The curricular unit includes 48h of theoretical classes and 16h of theoretical-practical classes. In the former, the teacher's teaching is accompanied by multimedia projection; during these classes, the teacher is always open to discussions with the students. In the TP lessons, students are asked to solve problems from a proposed list. The evaluation of this course consists of 2 written tests (each with a weight of 50% for the final grade). The final approval is dependent on achieving a minimum score of 9.5 in each test.
