Overall objectives:

1 - OBJECTIVES:
1.1 - To allow a first contact with the working environment (in companies, research laboratories, analytical laboratories, state agencies, etc.).
1.2 - Development of capacities for working in team and towards the achievement of pre-set objectives
1.3 - Application of the previous acquired knowledge and skills to solve real problems.
2 - SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT:
2.1 - Several (in the area of Biochemistry and related sciences).
2.2 - Development of the ability to work in an autonomous way.
2.3 - Development of the capacity of critical thinking.
2.4 - Development of the ability to apply the acquired knowledge to new situations.
2.5 - Development of capacities at the laboratory/professional level.
2.6 - Development of the capacity to search and interpret the scientific information.
2.7 - Development of the ability to design study/experimental strategies, interpret results and communicate those results in written and oral forms.

Syllabus:

1 - This unit corresponds to a supervised period of training in a real working environment (in companies, research laboratories, analytical laboratories, state agencies, etc.). Themes can be varied but should be in the scientific area of Biochemistry or related areas.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Bibliography search (with computers connected to the internet: B-on, Web of Knowledge) and development of laboratory practice/implementation of procedures in UMa laboratories (Biochemistry/Chemistry/Biology) and equipment therein. The supervised training can take place outside UMa (hospitals, laboratories, industry, etc.). Evaluation: a) Report of the activities of training (50% of the overall assessment of the course) submitted in a written and oral form; jury consisting of three elements (the course coordinator, the supervisor and a professor from the University of Madeira, preferably with experience in the area of the work); b) The continuous assessment of the performance and attitudes of the trainee during the work based on the information of the supervisor (50% of the overall assessment). Approval in the course: attainment of 9.5 (out of 20) in each of the evaluation components. No possibility to repeat the training period in the same academic year.
