Overall objectives:

1 - Understanding the contribution that qualitative methodologies can give to research in education.
2 - Knowing the main characteristics of qualitative approach and plans and the relevant technical research.
3 - Analysing the advantages of qualitative methodologies and its main limitations in the study of educational problems.
4 - Reflecting on ethical issues that arise in planning, execution and publication of the results of a qualitative research in education.
5 - Developing skills that enable them to choose the qualitative level suitable for the study of a concrete educational problem.
6 - Training some technical analysis of qualitative data.
7 - Being able to read meaningful critical investigations published due to more qualitative empirical studies.
8 - Understanding the possible complementary approaches in the construction of scientific knowledge.

Syllabus:

1 - Main characteristics of qualitative research: Tradition and foundations.
2 - Phases of qualitative research: some examples from actual investigations.
3 - The credibility of a qualitative study questions related to fidelity and validity of findings.
4 - Detailed analysis of some qualitative research plans (case studies, participatory research).
5 - Qualitative research models: naturalist and ethnographic, case studies, action research.
6 - Detailed analysis of some qualitative research techniques/data analysis (open interviews, participant observation, logbook, discourse analysis, and content analys).
7 - The preparation of the report of a qualitative study: possible structures.
8 - Ethical aspects to consider in the course of a qualitative research.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Will be referred to oral exposure, the debate based on slide projection, reading short texts and the discussion group and plenary. In addition to participating in classroom activities that will be accounted for 10% of the final grade, students must submit a research project focused on the use of qualitative methodologies performed in group worth 40% and to conduct an individual assessment written test knowledge - often it will be worth 50%. The evaluation of students presupposes also a frequency of 75% of classes taught.
