Overall objectives:

1 - This course aims at consolidating and extending, even within an initiation to the study of the Latin language, previously acquired knowledge, in the historical dimension and especially in the linguistic one, in order to allow the student a better contact with the Latin language, and, at the same time, to work out and deepen the reflection previously initiated on the origins of the Romance languages. With the work done, students should therefore be able to move themselves within the grammar of the Latin language, gradually becoming aware of their importance to a more authentic, deeper and more solid knowledge of their own language.


1 - Historical survey of Latin Language: Indo-European languages ​​and their classification; primitive Italic languages; Latin in time and space.
2 - Phonology: the restored pronunciation; the syllable; the main phonetic changes (some phenomena of vocalism and consonantism).
3 - Nominal inflection: regular nouns (continuation); some irregular names; the degrees of adjectives).
4 - Verbal inflection: the verb sum; regular verbs (continuation); some irregular verbs.
5 - Pronouns and adverbs.
6 - Syntax: the cases; circumstantial supplements; the subordinate clause.
7 - Lexicology and semantics: structure; composition and derivation, etymology and semantics; semantic evolution in Latin language and the evolution of Latin into Portuguese.
8 - The main moments and characters of Roman history.

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
The teaching of this course assumes, in theory classes, the expositive method, complemented, in theoretical and practical classes, by the work of the students. At first, the theoretical contents are exposed and briefly commented, using support materials. Subsequently, this exhibition is complemented by practical exercises aiming at consolidating the knowledge of the subjects learned (for instance, in morphology and syntax of the Latin Language). In order to develop a whole range of skills (in areas such as morphology, syntax, semantics, etc.), students are led to recapitulate and dynamically relate the theoretical contents with each other through the practice of reading, analysis and translation of Latin texts. The assessment of the students' learning process, in Latin Language A1.2, regarding the acquisition of knowledge and the development of skills, in what concerns both theoretical and practical components, is performed by: two written tests (40%+40%) and a research paper (20%).
