Overall objectives:

1 - At the end of the semester, students should be able to: Recognize and understand key facts and protagonists of the historical development of art and design, from nineteenth century to the late twentieth century, and its relations with the Portuguese context.
2 - Analyze the conceptual and aesthetic characteristics of each period , depending on the physical, social, cultural, political and economic realities.
3 - Participate actively in the debate about the role of designers in society, well as of the importance of design methodology.
4 - Develop research within the theory and history of design.


1 - 1. Post- war and mass society. Foundations of "industrial design " ( 1930-1945 ).
2 - Freedom of artistic expression : Action Painting, jazz and improvisation.
3 - Rationalism: The Ulm School and concepts of styling and streamlining.
4 - Pop art and consumer society. Advertising and marketing.
5 - The European identity: German, Italian, Swiss and Scandinavian design.
6 - Op art and Gestalt theory . Minimalism in art and design. Conceptual art .
7 - Alternative design or antidesign. Victor Papanek and ecodesign. The Memphis Group.
8 - Portuguese context: António Sena da Silva and Daciano da Costa. The Altamira gallery.
9 - Portuguese context: The Portuguese Association of Designers and the Portuguese Design Centre.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Combination of the following methods: - Expository and explanatory method. - Dialogic method. - Active approach. 1 - Periodic assessment: through quizzes (40%) and presentation of papers (50%). 2 - Continuous assessment: attendance and class participation (10%).
