Subject: Materials and Technologies

Scientific Area:

Scientific, Cultural, Social and Ethical Formation

Workload:

64 Hours

Number of ECTS:

5 ECTS

Language:

Portuguese

Overall objectives:

1 - Know and identify the various materials that can be used to design an artifact industrially produced.
2 - Recognize and identify the available materials on the market, knowing how to choose the most suitable one for a particular design project, be it industrial, interior or urban facility.
3 - Analyze and understand the origin, extraction, processing and production of various materials is also an important goal in a complete formation of Design students.

Syllabus:

1 - Introduction to materials science: materials, classification of materials, internal structure, connection types, physical and mechanical properties, materials cycle of life.
2 - Material properties: strength, conformation, deformation and rupture; durability and behavior to chemical and physical agents; aesthetic, symbolic and tactile characteristics, processing and manufacturing of materials.
3 - Materials for use in the design industry: natural stone, ceramics, glass, plaster, cement, concrete, plastics and other polymeric materials, steel and other ferrous metals, nonferrous metals, composites, wood, wood derivatives , paper, cork, other materials of animal and vegetable origin textiles, recycled materials, new materials.
4 - Technologies for extraction, transformation, creation, bonding and finishing of materials.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Theoretical approach using the theoretical exhibitions and discussion of examples of best practice. In the theoretical-practical component analysis of different materials, interpretation and analysis of their application in different application scenarios. In Normal Season, the assessment is carried out through two tests and two works that aim to assess knowledge acquired in theoretical and theoretical-practical classes. Each frequency and test will have a weight of 25% in the final classification. All elements of assessment (frequencies and tests) can be recovered in the Recourse Season. The Special Season will be evaluated based on an Exam that aims to assess theoretical and theoretical-practical knowledge.
