Overall objectives:

1 - Identify and deal with the principle issues of History of Portugal in the 19th and 20th centuries, highlighting their constants and their lines of force, through analysis focused on various aspects: political, institutional, economic and financial, without forgetting their relation with culture, religion and society;
2 - Define and illustrate the importance of historical knowledge in the analysis and the comprehension of the present and its function as an essential element in the development framework and social competitiveness;
3 - Understand the processus of the statement/assertion and the specificity of Madeirian and Portuguese cultural identity;
4 - Develop the concepts of internationalization, globalization, cultural identities and national, identities, region, nation and transnationality;
5 - Improve the capacities of oral and written communications as far as the vocabulary and the conceptual discourse are concerned, which are appropriate to the curricular unit.


1 - The decadence of the Old regime and the liberalism restauration (1801-1820).
2 - The Constitutional Monarchy and the development of the liberal regime: the temptations of the institution of a system. (1820-1910).
3 - The 1st Portuguese Republic: the implosion of a regime (1910-1926).
4 - The "New State": the implosion of a (new) order (1933-1974).
5 - The democratic Portugal and the Europeian integration: the construction of a new path?
6 - The Contemporay History of Madeira and Madeira in the Portugal of History
