Overall objectives:

1 - The curricular unit English Linguistics gives the students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with basic concepts in linguistics, focusing in particular on the English language and its structure. All major disciplines and sub-disciplines are covered (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics) and well as further extensions and interdisciplinary approaches (e.g. sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, forensic linguistics, etc).
2 - The students have a chance to implement their newly acquired knowledge and skills, working on a small research project on a topic agreed with the teacher.

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Methodologically, the unit is delivered in two parts: first, there is an intensive theoretical introduction, during which the students are able to familiarise themselves with key concepts in Linguistics. The teaching mode then changes to a more individualised 'tutorials' during which the students work on their group assignments (a small-scale research project on a chosen topic). Each week is dedicated to a specific issue: e.g. choosing the topic, methodological approaches, time management plan, etc. There are two parts of the assessment: project proposal and presentation, each worth 50% (Evaluation Type A).
