Overall objectives:

1 - The objective of this discipline (Curricular Unit) is to present different difficulties in the translation work - from Portuguese (Vietnamese) into French or vice-versa. To this purpose, the lecturer draws on her own research ouput undertaken in this domain, by borrowing from literary corpora (excerpts) written in the source language (Portuguese) and their published translation into the target language - French. Different contrastive approaches shall be developped thanks to cultural and linguistic specificities in each language : Portuguese and French (two closed romance languages) or Vietnamese and French (two opposite languages, from different origin). Translation Studies entail the discovery of linguistic and cultural characteristics of the afore mentioned languages.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
The Curricular Unit (UC) 'Translation Studies' is constituted by both, theories and practices activities, based on Portuguese original books and their translation. Their analyses are always realized through the constant contrast between languages (Portuguese / French / Vietnamese) aiming at determining and discovering their respective linguistic and cultural characteristics. Mastering both the source language and the target language is the key issue of the UC in which methodology requires examples or illustrations in the theoretical and practical applications which represent two prerequisite parameters in its success. The UC assessment is defined through an observation and analysis work achieved based on a corpus proposed by the teacher or by students themselves. The work presentation will be an oral and written project (100%). Attendance to classes is compulsory (90%).
