The main aim of this cycle of studies is to promote the acquisition of the highest level of knowledge and skills in Automation and Instrumentation, namely those related to monitoring and control systems; electronics, instrumentation and hardware support platforms; telecommunications support solutions and power systems.
The doctorate in Automation and Instrumentation is divided into two components. The first year is dedicated to the curricular component and the last two are focused on the elaboration of an original theses. Upon completion of the mandatory 60 ECTS in the curricular component of the degree, students are awarded a Diploma of Advanced Studies.
The degree was recognized by the order of 08-06-2012 of the Secretary of State for Education and School Administration, as a way to further develop the teaching career of the recruitment group 540 of basic education, 3rd cycle and secondary education as foreseen in the terms of article 54 of the Teaching Career Statute.

The cycle of studies of the Doctorate in Automation and Instrumentation is comprised of 6 semesters (3 academic years). Those who obtain 180 ECTS are awarded the title. The fundamental aim of the doctorate programme in Automation and Instrumentation in the field of Electronic Engineering is to contribute towards the creation of highly qualified researchers with the skills to carry out research projects autonomously, whether in the academic context or in other economic related areas (like the business sector).
