HPTC in Family and Community Service

The Higher Professional Technical Course (HTPC) in Family and Community service is lectured in the framework of the polytechnical higher education and has a duration of 4 semesters (2 academic years), with a total of 120 ECTS. This course awards students with a Diploma of Professional Higher Technician, with the level 5 of the European Qualification Framework for lifelong learning. Bearing in mind the continuation of studies, graduates might benefit from the allocation of accreditation.
The course in Family and Community Service includes the study of several topics within several fields such as education and training of social services and counselling, nursing, philosophy and ethics, psychology, management and administration, framework of organisations/companies, biology and biochemistry, foreign languages and literature, mother tongue and literature, health and pharmaceutical sciences.
With the components of general and technical-scientific training, namely the cognitive, relational and instrumental components, invoked in a work context (internship), students will be capable of providing services and care in a multidisciplinary and networking philosophy, to vulnerable individuals and families throughout their life cycles, giving them the needed physical, psychological and social support, in a community and/or institutional setting.

Career Opportunities and Employability

The holders of this degree may carry out duties in liberal regime or dependent deployment, in public, private and social institutions that provide support to individuals in vulnerable situations, with disabilities and/or functional dependency.
As examples of professional contexts are considered households, day care centres, nursing homes, hospitals, Childhood support centres, centres for the support of disabled and multi-disabled individuals, support centres for the underprivileged and for the homeless, support homes for victims of violence, social centres, educational centres, youth rehabilitation centres, schools, detention facilities...

Candidates

Possible Candidates to the HTPC in Family and Community Service:
- Holders of a High School Diploma or similar;
- Candidates that are over 23 years old, whose admission has been approved through the higher education special contest meant for students over 23;
- Holders of a Technological Specialisation course diploma, of a Higher Professional Technical Course diploma or of a Higher Education Degree.
One of the following fields is relevant to the admission in this course: Biology, Portuguese, Sociology .
