Overall objectives:

1 - Recognize that building Biology knowledge involves multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches;
2 - Know, understand and be able to use basic concepts of microbial, plant and animal biology;
3 - Relate the various conceptual contents in the understanding of microbial, plant and animal biology;
4 - Develop skills to reflect and value Biology knowledge in agricultural practice;

1 - Molecules and Cells
1.1 - Cell types; Cell Organelles; Cell cycle and cell division; Intercellular communication; Cell death.
2 - Genetics and heredity
2.1 - Mendelian heredity
2.2 - Definitions. chromosomes: types, gene, alleles, recessive, dominant, co-dominant, homozygous, heterozygous.
2.3 - Advantageous heterozygosity and disadvantageous heterozygosity.
2.4 - Genetic mutations. Interactions between genes and environment.
3. - Biological Diversity. Classificação e Reinos da vida;
3.1. - Microbial diversity (Archaea, Bacteria, Eucarya, Virus).

Evaluation Methodology:
The aim is to acquire and apply the knowledge foreseen in the course?s objectives and syllabus contents, through an active and interdisciplinary methodology. The student must learn the basic concepts and know-how to relate them to each other, proceeding with their reinforcement, through applied learning using available tools and study visits to concrete situations of the future professional activity. To achieve the objectives and implement the syllabus, the UC's contact hours are scheduled as follows: Theoretical-practical teaching: 36 hours; Practical and laboratory teaching: 40 hours. The evaluation will include several moments of evaluation applied to the theoretical-practical components, laboratory practices and field work (e.g. frequencies, works and reports), any of the elements cannot exceed a weighting of 50%. the theoretical-practical elements can be retrieved in resource.
