Overall objectives:

1 - Master the most significant figures and works of the main authors of Portuguese medieval literature, in relation to their poetics and their historical, cultural and political context;
2 - Know the cultural and textual premises up to 1450;
3 - Identify the characteristics of an era that unites the birth of Portugal with the literary traditions, forms and orientations projected by and for Europe;
4 - Obtain solid knowledge of Portuguese literature, taking into account the programs adopted in the 3rd cycle of elementary school and in high school;
5 - Acquire skills of analysis and independent research;
6 - Develop the ability to express oneself clearly and rigorously, using the language specific to the discipline.

2 - Convention and originality of Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry
2.1 - The function of formal and thematic conventions
2.2 - Types of songs
2.3 - Fixed structures and recurring themes
2.4 - Variations, inversions and innovations
3 - Historiographical prose: between history and fiction
3.1 - Function of history in the Middle Ages: memory, edification and legitimacy
3.2 - Notions of verisimilitude, authority and truth in the medieval context
4 - Construction of Portugal as a nation in Portuguese chronicles
4.1 - War as the basis of power
4.2 - Among heroes: rewriting as an instrument of legitimacy
4.3 - Enemies: Christians, Moors and political opponents

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Taught in a seminar format, the classes seek to combine the teaching practice of transmitting content with the existence of sessions in which a theoretical question organizes the debate, previously prepared by reading the recommended bibliography (problem-based learning, PBL). Classes will combine theoretical and practical components ? theoretical presentation will be consolidated with practical work, with the aim of leading students to discover and understand the content through reasoning, debate and individual and group research activities. Analysis and synthesis activities are planned, conducive to joint discussion and sharing of ideas. During classes, the focus will not be on all the subjects and studies of the works and bibliography subject to assessment, but students should complement their knowledge of the most important arguments and concepts through independent study. Mandatory attendance of 75% of classes. Individual work (including oral argumentation): 20% Two attendance: 40% each Grade improvement: Grade improvement exam (In accordance with current legislation).
