Overall objectives:

1 - Acquire a diachronic overview of Translation Studies.
2 - Promote research on translation studies in target languages: L1/Source Language - Portuguese / Target Language - English in the global panorama.
3 - Familiarize students with paradigms and methodologies relevant to the areas of translation and terminology in the digital era.
4 - Produce a text in the target language, based on a terminological description.

Syllabus:

1 - Module 1. Translation i. Translation studies: Diachronic perspective ii. Translation Methods and Techniques ii. Corpora selection of printed texts, electronic and multimodal documents iii. Ethics and responsibility in corpora research and translation
2 - Module II. Terminology i. Brief overview: Terminology across domains in professional discourse ii. Portuguese and English: particular features (pluricentric languages) iii. Lingua-culture (comparative conceptual systems and linguistic systems) iv. Morphology (term formation): comparative terminology perspectives v. Terminography: terminological products vi. Term formation principles vii. Term formation methods: roots of the Portuguese and English languages (concordance; terminological context; terminological phrases)
3 - Module 3: Project i. Corpus selection and compilation ii. Data selection iii. Organization of databases iv. File compilation and synthesis v. Description and categorization of discursive communities: etymological, lexical, morphological, semantic and terminological specificities vi. Presentation and analysis of results, difficulties and opportunities

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Student-centered and task-oriented methodology supported by teaching/learning for specific purposes, of reflective and collaborative kind, by oral and brief written assignments (pair and group work) and presentations. Interactive and activity-based approach - practising the language in order to develop students' interpersonal and professional communication skills; Linguistic analysis in the context of authentic sources (including work on corpora and terminology) supported by the translation of written texts. Assessment criteria: Continuous assessment - organisation of a database and a file (40% - 9 Points); contrastive analysis of specificities of the source and target languages ;(40% - 9 Points); presentation of the project in forum (20% - 2 points).
