Overall objectives:

1 - Understand and contextualize psychologica l intervention models from an historical and epistemological perspective.
2 - Acquire and integrate knowledge regarding the psychoanalytic and systemic models in order to build a conceptual framework covering key principles, concepts and intervention techniques.
3 - Promote a critical approach and reflect about topics and subjects related w ith the presented intervention psychological models, aiming to build a stronger understanding and application to the different areas and practical problems.

Syllabus:

1 - Models of psychological intervention. Theoretical frameworks, goals, and contexts. An integration opportunity.
2 - Psychoanalytic model: emergency and present time.
2.1 - Sigmund Freud psychoanalytic model: assumptions and constructs.
2.2 - Postfreudian authors and their theoretical and therapeutic contributions.
2.3 - Psychoanalytic therapy: setting, processes, and techniques.
2.4 - Psychodynamic intervention. Types and techniques.
3 - Systemic model
3.1 - Historical, theo retical and epistemological framework: General Systems Theory, Theory of Pragmatics of Communication, and Cybernetics' Theories.
3.2 - Family and psychopathology/symptom in a systemic approach.
3.3 - Systemic intervention typologies (Family and Marital Therapy; Network Intervention; Multi-familial Intervention).
3.4 - Systemic intervention models (structural, strategic, transgenerational).
4 - Psychological intervention in disaster.
4.1 - Approaches and models.
4.2 - Victims, families, technic ians and community.

Evaluation Methodology:
Classes will be developed using the expositive method (e.g., lectures supported with audiovisual content and tools such as power-point slides and content-wise selected videos) complemented with practical exercises (e.g., scientific articles analyses and case-studies). Active participation of the students will be promoted and encouraged inside the class (through oral participation and resolution of the exercises) and outside through the promotion of the student autonomous work. Class materials will be made available either on-line (info student platform) or through the use of resources available in the library. Assessment will follow the Model B of the Learning Assessment Regulations of the University of Madeira) including, though, a theoretical component (e.g. consisting for example on a written exam, accounting for 50% of the final grade) and a more practical component (e.g., 50% weighted practical work or reports).
