Overall objectives:

1 This course consolidates the very basic knowledge of the German language. The course will enable students to achieve Level A1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. For this purpose, it will be very important for students to practise and to focus on Language (language awareness). There will be a constant contrastive reflection on language and intercultural approaches. Authentic supplementary material in the fields of Culture and Communication will be made available to students throughout the semester. By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 

1.1 Understand (and answer) simple questions, information, news on the telephone, and short dialogues in everyday and professional situations. 

1.2 Find relevant information in basic written texts. 

1.3 Write short texts. 

1.4 Introduce themselves and answer questions about themselves in a dialogue. 

1.5 Be understood with some effort by native speakers and be able to understand them, as long as their partners speak slowly and clearly. 

Syllabus:

1.The German Language

1.1. Grammar

1.1.1. Sentence Structure ? position of the verb after the subject, inverted with the subject or at the end of the sentence.

1.1.2. Definite and Indefinite Articles of masculine, feminine, neuter and plural words.

1.1.3. Verb tenses

1.1.3.1. Conjugation in the Present, Present Perfect, Simple Past and Future Simple.

1.1.3.2. Main, auxiliary, modal, reflexive, and verbs with a separable particle.

1.1.4. The Cases: Subject, Direct Object, Indirect Object, Possessive.

1.1.5. Personal and possessive Pronouns.

1.1.6. Adjectives and adjective degrees

1.1.7. Punctuation and phonetics

1.1.8. Adverbs of time, place, sequence and frequency.

1.1.9. Conjunctions: and, but, therefore, because, while, even though

1.2.0. Prepositions of time and place and changeable prepositions: in, at, on, behind, in front of, next to, etc.

1.2.1. Prepositions used with the accusative case ( for, without, against, through, etc) and dative case( with, since, from, at, towards, at)

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Classification Type: Quantitative (0-20) 
Evaluation Methodology: - Students work in lessons mainly in the following different ways: individual work, pair work and group work. Students also have to speak to the rest of the class when they have to inform them about their pair work or group work. - Directed teaching only takes place when it is necessary to explain the complexity of some language features, or because the first explanation was not clear enough, or because students request further information. 

Asessment according to the evaluation regulation of University of Madeira (Model A) will be followed:

- To qualify for the continuous assessment, 80% of attendance is necessary,

 - Assessment consists of two partial exams (each 30%) and one oral test (30%).

 - Students with ?normal? status (N) will be admitted to the appeal season, as long as they meet the conditions to retake or to improve the partial exam with the lowest mark (60%) and the oral exam (30%).
