Overall objectives:

1 - Being able to recognize the main groups of fungi, plants (including mosses, ferns and seed plants).
2 - Being able to recognize the main endemic, native and exotic plants.
3 - Being able to relate the species to the habitat, being able to name and recognize plants cultivated or used by man of the same family or genus.
4 - Being able to recognize the main morphological aspects, as well as the etymology of the names and also the authors of the species and their nationalities.
5 - Know the main botanical authors related to the flora of the Madeira archipelago, as well as the main historical aspects of the visit to the archipelago of these botanists.

Syllabus:

1 - Introduction to Madeira flora, origin, evolution, endemicity, type of endemism, exotic flora.
2 - Biodiversity:
2.1 - Mycoflora.
2.2 - Lichen Flora.
2.3 - Bryophytic flora.
2.4 - Pteridophyta, ferns, their evolution and diversity in the Madeira archipelago.
2.5 - Spermatophyta, seed plants, main groups and evolutionary origin. Diversity.
2.5.1 - The gymnosperms (s.l.), main groups represented in the flora of Madeira, affinities with garden plants and others, cultivated plants.
2.5.2 - Angiosperms (s.l.), origin, main groups represented in the flora of Madeira, garden plants and cultivated plants, diversity in the main families: e.g. Lauraceae, Ranunculaceae, Papaveraceae, Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae, Labiatae, Poaceae.
3 - Historical aspects, main visiting botanists of the archipelago, nationality and reports.

Evaluation Methodology:
The evaluation of the Curricular Unit comprises: 1 practice with a frequency of 35% of the final classification (is recoverable at the period of resource); 1 Theoretical frequency with a weight of 35% in the final classification (is recoverable at the period of resource); The assessment of identification/field notebook with a weight of 30% in the classification (not recoverable at the period of resource) Minimum grade of each component - 9,5 points.
