The University of Madeira is the higher education institution in Portugal with the highest percentage of publications in cooperation with China
The University of Madeira is the higher education institution in Portugal with the highest percentage of indexed publications with joint affiliation with Chinese institutions in the years 2021 and 2022 (13.0%), followed by the University of Minho (4.5%) and ISCTE (4.5%). The University of the Azores (4.5%) and the University of Lisbon (4.3%) complete the top 5. These results, which more than double the first place achieved by the University of Madeira in the period 2016-2020, were extracted from the Scopus database, having been analysed and recently published, on the website https://pachecotorgal.com, by Fernando Pacheco Togal, Principal Investigator at the Centre for Territory, Environment and Construction of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho and Advisory Member of the Portuguese Engineers Association.
This outcome is of particular significance for the University of Madeira since China is currently one of the fastest growing countries scientifically, having even, according to a study published by the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (Japan), surpassed the USA in most cited articles.
Furthermore, it should be noted that the institutional cooperation between the University of Madeira and China was the result of a strong and strategic commitment of the institution, which has more than a decade and a half of joint work, having been particularly strengthened with the award in 2010 of the Chair in Nanotechnologies (FCT / Santander), which allowed to attract international experts, through joint research and development projects, to the higher education institution and, in particular, to the Madeira Chemistry Research Centre.
In this regard, it should also be noted that the University of Madeira, through the Madeira Chemistry Research Centre, has intense collaborative activity with several Chinese teaching and research institutions, with emphasis on cooperation with Donghua University (Shanghai), and is one of the founding members of the Belt and Road Joint Lab on Advanced Materials, based at Zhejiang University in Shanghai, with emphasis on cooperation with Donghua University (Shanghai), and is one of the founding members of the Belt and Road Joint Lab on Advanced Materials, based at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, devoted to research in biomedical materials, advanced materials for energy, nanotechnology, marine sciences and environment, which promotes scientific cooperation and the exchange of students and researchers between the two countries and the creation of joint research laboratories in Portuguese research units.
