Eva Henriques - Undergraduate degree in Mathematics in 2010

1. What has been your career path after completing the course?

Following completion of my undergraduate degree, I completed a year-long professional internship in the Research Unit at the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital. After my internship, I resumed my duties in the same department as a senior statistics technician until the present date. My duties include treating statistical data for two projects: GENEMACOR and GENHYMAPE. The first study is linked to ischaemic heart disease and the second to hypertension. Within the scope of these studies there have been several initiatives including talks, publications, and articles presented at different national and international congresses, which have been awarded different prizes over the years. More recently, we have started to collaborate with other services at the hospital and/or health centres in projects and research studies.

2. Which aspects of your academic training were relevant to your profession?

One of the most relevant aspects of my undergraduate degree was the development of logical reasoning and problem solving skills. In addition to this, I also furthered my knowledge and experience in using different programmes and software. The postgraduate was essential on a statistical level as feature subjects were more specific to that area.

3. Who would you recommend your course to?

I would recommend my course to students who are always ready for a challenge. One of the characteristics of mathematics is that we can study it for years and always learn something new: innovating techniques which allow for an improved development in terms of logical reasoning but also the motivation to do more and better.

4. Why the University of Madeira?

At the time I entered university, I had never thought about studying abroad. I have always like the idea of staying in Madeira even more so because of the great conditions they offer, including the subjects which were ideal for the path I wanted to follow.
