Undergraduate Degree in Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is the field of engineering which encompasses the design, project, construction and maintenance of all types of necessary infrastructures for the well-being and development of society, in addition to the conservation of the natural environment. They play a significant role in the construction of the modern society with a sustainable future. Measures of good practice towards the protection of the environment are studied, debated and promoted throughout the course. Apart from the buildings where we live and the roads and bridges that we use on a daily basis, society depends on the work of the civil Engineers for the supply of potable water, energy, waste management and others.
Overall, a civil engineer should be duly prepared and endowed with a solid foundation in theoretical aspects and subjects, such as mathematics and physics, which enable rational thinking and analysis of situations. In addition to this, professionals in the area need to follow a code of ethics and professional deontology. Due to the relevance of their profession in society, civil engineers need to carry out their work in a responsible and thorough manner. A vital attribute for civil engineers is the ability to communicate and be a leader, as they frequently need to coordinate professionals from different areas.
The cycle of studies geared towards obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering is comprised of 6 semesters (3 academic years). Those who successfully obtain 180 ECTS are awarded the title.
The main objective of this degree is to provide students with the previously described knowledge and the ability to independently face the challenges of demanding and dynamic, national and international, working markets.
Throughout the course students are prepared and guided towards lifelong learning in order to strengthen their capabilities of solving the challenges that a developing society will naturally bring fourth.
